Happy Birthday, Joan Didion

OK, hers is December 5th, not 15th, but hey, I'm late for everything.

One of the few cool Joans out there. (You think I'm kidding, but between dead French martyrs and women who fare badly in pop songs, the pickin's are slim.)

Yes, loved Year of Magical Thinking, and "At The Dam" in The White Album is one of my favorite essays of all time, but I'm an especially big fan of Where I Was From and recommend it to all lapsed Californians. Celebrate her genius: read 'em all.
