Graphic Journalism

I’m sorry to have missed the National Conference For Media Reform’s panel on graphic journalism, so, am equally grateful for Erin Polgreen’s analysis of the trend, which includes a not-to-be-missed comments thread.

This week’s strip: “A Ruin of One’s Phone”

My editor didn’t get this title right away. Did you? Say it out loud.

Working for Peanuts

Toured the new Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates offices this week courtesy of the remarkable Paige Braddock, Creative Associates EVP and, using whatever spare time she finds in an alternate universe, Jane’s World mastermind. Here we are in the office of staff artist Vicki Scott, who decided to one-up her colleagues’ action-figure interior decorating habits with her own mural, and also co-created the just-released first Peanuts graphic novel…

This week’s strip: “Zap!”

I haven’t played LaserTag since a sad experience in the 90s when I naively showed up to play in a white T-shirt (which any LT player knows instantly made me into a Red Shirt), stripped to a (vest-covered) bra and got murdered left & right anyway. MoCCa Festival 2011: Graphic novel awesomeness

At the “Building A Book from Start to Finish” panel, the great Stephen DeStefano discusses relocating his freshly Eisner-nominated Lucky in Love from Brooklyn to Hoboken, while Lauren Redniss describes being stalked first by Exelon Corporation during the research for Radioactive, then by stunned readers who didn’t know the book’s cover had been printed in luminiscent ink: “Oh my god, it’s glowing!”

This wk’s strip: “The Gold Coaster”

Be the first person to tell me this already exists, as I’m sure it does, and I’ll give you a speaking role in an upcoming strip…

Why comics still get a bad rap outside comics

This makes me nerd-crazy every time I see it in the subway. Why the horrid Greek coffee cup SFX? Why WhizBang when there are nine million other better fonts? Why is Uncle Sam done in ghost colors? Move that caption! Aaaarghhh.

This wk’s strips: “Pay to Prey”/”He’s All Hot Hair”

It is, in fact, possible to be so un-timely posting a strip that by the time you do, the strip is timely again.

Welcome…

…To the new site! Everything you never wanted to know about me as an editor is in About, Services and Book Projects; everything you suspected about me as a cartoonist and illustrator is in About, Bitter Girl and Gallery (which itself is still expanding). New Bitter Girl strips will eventually move to the eponymous page, but for now they still appear every week or so on the Blog. Enjoy.
