One of the first things I see walking into the Javits: Grove’s promotional push for Alif the Unseen, my awesome author G.Wilson’s debut prose novel about a young Middle Eastern hacktivist in a repressive emirate, presciently written at the dawn of the Arab Spring. The first chapter’s free on flashdrive to anyone who wants their computer checked for genies.

I’m thrilled to be on the inaugural advisory board for this tablet newsmagazine specializing in illustrated content: ”a visual cure for the common news story.” It’s founded by forward-thinking powerhouse Erin Polgreen with the support of New Media Women Entrepreneurs and the International Women’s Media Foundation.

Before getting sucked into comics editorial, I was, and remain, a journalism nerd: as an editorial cartoonist in college, a West Coast newsweekly contributor/founder in the 90s, and an East Coast newsweekly and custom magazine illustrator in the 00s. So I’ve been watching the rise of graphic-narrative journalism with great interest, per the blogroll — everything from Cartoon Movement to the Stanford Graphic Novel Project — and now it’s time to stop watching. Stay tuned.
